CHINA OVERTAKES JAPAN IN TRADE WITH AUSTRALIA

China has surpassed Japan as Australia's biggest trading partner.The Australian Bureau of Statistics says exports and imports between China and Australia reached about $52.7 billion in the 12 months to March.
Exports and imports between Japan and Australia were marginally lower at $50.6 billion.
Commsec chief economist Craig James says it is a significant development."This is clearly a red letter day in Australia's history," he said.
"For the first time, Japan is Australia's largest trading partner. "It's usually been the case that Japan and the US have vied for supremacy, but China has clearly passed Japan as our biggest trading partner."
Meanwhile, a boost in rural exports has failed to improve Australia's trade deficit, which has declined for the 60th consecutive month.
Australia's trade deficit grew by $894 million in March to $1.6 billion. Economists say the drought cannot be blamed because rural exports rose in March by $8 million .
Mr James says Australian businesses are struggling to compete overseas. "The bottom line appears to be a higher Australian dollar reducing the competitiveness of Australian goods," he said.In comparison, overseas goods and services coming into Australia increased by about 1 per cent.
